Nailing a double at Monday's FINALS

A great result tonight for Sport Gulf Harbour with our lads winning Term 3 Finals in both the Y7-8 and Y9-11 age groups.

The SGH Mohawks won 27 - 11 against the Wentworth Juniors.

Matthew T, Harry, Tyrone, Matthew B, Connor, Caleb, Darren

The SGH Matrix fought back from 4 points down in the final minutes to push the game into extra time and to finally beat the OC Jordans 32-31. Hats off to our opponents who played a great game - but those  last 2 minutes were ours!

Dion - HBC Volunteer Coach of the Month

Wahoo!

Some much deserved recognition for our wonderful basketball coach, Dion Davidson, who has just been awarded May's "Hibiscus Coast's Volunteer Coach of the month" by Harbour Sport.

Congratulations Dion - we're so pleased that others outside the Club also recognise the great work you have been doing for Sport Gulf Harbour, for so long.

Nomination

Every Sunday morning for 3 years Dion has inspired young SGH basketballers. It's not your 'ordinary' team coaching session as the 30 or so ballers he trains are different ages; genders; abilities; and from different schools. Somehow Dion creates the cohesion.

Dion always arrives enthusiastic, with fresh ideas, and keen to support any parents who want to get more closely involved. He teaches our players to have fun, be sportsmanlike and play hard - and is the reason so many of our young basketballers have developed a passion for the game and are able to contribute so much to our local basketball scene.

Thanks to Dion, 4 nights week SGH is able to field a basketball team and 70 SGH players uphold our club values and make us proud.

Local basketball developments

The local basketball scene seems to be hotting up and we've been asked to let our local ballers know of two new developments.

Year 11-13 league

Next term the Leisure Centre is starting a Year 11-13 local basketball league on a Wednesday night. Why not pull a team together? You can either enter a team 'direct' with the Leisure Centre OR use Sport Gulf Harbour to help you pull a team together by co-ordinating.

Email me if you're interested in the latter and we'll make sure we've got enough larger uniforms for you guys/gals. Maybe we'll see the return of some of your older members?

Coast Basketball - FREE Sunday skills training (aged 10 plus)

Our local rep team, Coast Basketball, has organised a magic opportunity for any young players (aged 10 plus) who want to get some additional coaching. Coach Bruce (Boyce) of Evolution Basketball will be holding FREE skills training EVERY Sunday, 3pm at Orewa College gym.

Get down there, up your skills and have some fun with other local ballers who share your love of the game. (If you are interested in trialling later in the year it's a great opportunity to improve yourself and get your face known.)

Help us spread the word..

Basketball news

Term 1 results

Wow - what a great Term 1 we had. SGH was represented in the final at every age group  and we walked away with 3 x 1st; 3 x 2nd and lots of great experiences.

Here are the teams that secured a 1st Place:

SGH Swish (Y1-2)
 SGH Titans  (Y3-4 s.2)
 SGH Matrix (9-11 s.1)

But whether you made your finals or not one thing remains true. You were ALL terrific representatives for Sport Gulf Harbour - thank you for making us proud.

Ready for Term 2?

We hope so because team lists have just been emailed and we're looking forward to getting started.
Note: There are still spaces free in each of the following age group teams:

  • Y1-2 (need another 3 or 4 to start a new team)
  • Y5-6
  • Y7-8
  • Y9 +
so if you have friends who want to get involved, ask them to get in touch urgently.

Basketball training in full swing

Our decision to split Sunday training into juniors (Y1-4) and seniors (Y5+) appears to have been popular with our first two sessions both being well attended. Approx. 12 session 1; 25 second session.

Our second training session was covered by Llew Dodd (apparently Dion also has a 'proper' job that actually pays him!) so a big thumbs up for Llew for filling in for us.

Dion is back with us this coming Sunday (6th March) and, remember, this is the last of your pre-paid coaching sessions. Everything AFTER 6th March is $3 cash on the day which goes towards covering the cost of the leisure centre hire.

One request - please can all players check into training sessions so that I can get a feel for who is attending and which teams are managing to train together.

Thank you!

Between 3:30pm - 5:30pm we are taking Term 1 registrations for:

  • Basketball
  • Netball (provisional at this stage)
  • Weet-bix TRYathlon on 3rd April
All Annual Membership registrations will receive a SGH boot bag.

Two Important Notes:

  1. Change of venue - now in the staff room, not rooms 8 & 9.
